Why Does My Engine Misfire at Idle but Run Better While Driving?

An engine that shakes at a stoplight but feels better once you accelerate is giving us a useful clue. Idle is one of the hardest operating conditions for an engine to hide a small problem. Airflow is low, engine speed is low, and each cylinder has to contribute evenly for the engine to sit still without shaking.


Once RPM comes up, the problem can become less noticeable. That does not mean it disappeared. We look at what changes between idle and higher engine speed, then test the systems most affected by those changes.


Vacuum Leaks Show Up Strongest at Idle


A vacuum leak is high on the list when an engine runs rough at idle and improves when you press the accelerator.


At idle, the throttle plate is nearly closed, and the engine is operating under high intake vacuum. A cracked hose, leaking intake gasket, failed PCV component, or another opening lets unmetered air enter the engine. That extra air can make the fuel mixture too lean and cause one or several cylinders to misfire.


Open the throttle, and the engine starts taking in much more air than normal. The same small leak becomes a smaller percentage of the total airflow, so the engine can feel noticeably better.


At our shop, fuel-trim data and smoke testing help us find these leaks instead of spraying chemicals around the intake and hoping the idle changes.


A Weak Ignition Part Can Still Cause an Idle Misfire


Spark plugs and ignition coils do not always fail only under acceleration. A fouled plug, damaged coil boot, weak coil, or oil-filled spark plug well can create an inconsistent spark at idle too.


The pattern is important. If one cylinder keeps accumulating misfires while the engine idles, we focus on that cylinder and compare its plug and coil with the others.


We do not automatically replace a full set of coils because one cylinder misses. Swapping a coil to another cylinder is a useful test. If the misfire follows the coil, we have strong evidence that the coil is the problem. If it stays with the cylinder, we keep looking.


Fuel Injectors Can Struggle Most at Low Engine Speed


An injector that is partially restricted or not delivering fuel evenly can create a rough idle while becoming less obvious at higher RPM.


At idle, the engine is using very small amounts of fuel. A cylinder that receives slightly less than the others stands out because every combustion event needs to be consistent. Increase engine speed and the engine can sometimes mask that imbalance better.


Clues that push us toward an injector include:


  • One-cylinder misfire that stays on the same cylinder
  • A spark plug that looks different from the others
  • Normal ignition coil operation
  • Uneven cylinder contribution
  • Injector electrical or flow problems


We test before replacing the injector. Wiring faults and mechanical engine problems can create the same cylinder-specific misfire code.


Low Compression Is Easy to Feel at Idle


A cylinder with low compression does not contribute as much power as the cylinders around it. At idle, that difference is easy to feel because the engine has very little momentum to hide it.


Worn valves, a burned valve, piston-ring problems, or valve timing issues can all reduce compression. The engine can seem better once RPM rises, but the weak cylinder is still there.


This is where repeated parts replacement becomes expensive. If a plug and coil test good and the misfire refuses to move away from one cylinder, compression testing belongs in the diagnosis.


During an inspection, we also review valve timing data and engine vacuum when symptoms point to a mechanical problem. Ignition parts cannot fix a cylinder that is not sealing correctly.


Dirty Throttle Bodies Can Make Idle Control Unstable


Modern engines control idle airflow very precisely. Carbon buildup around the throttle plate can interfere with that control, especially when the opening is almost completely closed.


The driver can feel an idle that drops too low, surges, or shakes when the A/C compressor turns on. Pressing the accelerator opens the throttle farther, so the restriction around the idle position matters less.


Cleaning the throttle body helps when buildup is actually affecting airflow. Some vehicles also require an idle relearn or throttle adaptation afterward. We check the system first rather than treating throttle cleaning as a universal cure for every rough idle.


Engine Mounts Can Make a Small Misfire Feel Much Worse


Sometimes two problems happen at the same time. A mild engine misfire can feel severe when an engine mount is worn or collapsed.


Mounts isolate normal engine vibration from the body. When one fails, vibration comes through the steering wheel, seat, or floor more strongly at idle. Raise the engine speed and the vibration changes, which can make the vehicle feel much better while driving.


We still need to identify whether the engine is truly misfiring. Scan data, cylinder contribution, and engine speed tell us that. If the engine is running evenly but the vehicle shakes badly in gear, the mounts move much higher on the list.


Do Not Ignore a Rough Idle Because It Clears Up


An idle-only misfire is still a fault. Left alone, it can increase emissions, damage the catalytic converter if it becomes severe, and turn into a more noticeable drivability problem later.


Regular maintenance helps prevent worn plugs and neglected intake problems from reaching this point, but once the engine is already shaking, diagnosis comes first. The best repair depends on whether the cause is air, fuel, ignition, compression, or something making the vibration feel worse than it really is.
